Cantina Rizzi

Piedmonte
http://www.cantinarizzi.it/testi/down-intro.asp

The company was set up in 1974 by Ernesto Dellapiana on his family’s nineteenth century estate. Having grown up with a passion for the land and wine-growing, in 1973 he decided to leave the city - and an established paper-making business - to follow the great love of his life: the land of the Langa, and its hard-to-work hillsides.

He renovated the family farmstead after reassembling various inheritances, and enlarged and completely transformed the original buildings to create a winery with ageing and storage cellars.

The first wines were produced in 1974.

In 1984 he re-acquired the BOITO farm, which had belonged to his family in the past.

Then other recent purchase dates back to 1993, when the VILLA MANZOLA farm was added to the estate.

And in the first months of 2004 He bought a new vineyard in one of most prestigious area of Barbaresco: PAJORE’

Over the years the winery's proprietor has dedicated himself to extending and improving the company and its products in terms of both quantity and quality, making it - with its 85 acres in a single lot - one of the largest, and most interesting and unquestionably important wine estates in the Barbaresco-growing area.

This commitment has also been a feature of the wine-making itself, with a constant quest for continually higher quality in seeking to match the most innovative processing equipment and techniques with the classic traditions of the Langa.

In the last years to the job of the Proprietor is added the work of Jole and Enrico Dellapiana, the daughter and the son of Ernesto, who are actively entered into the activities of the firm.

Jole has begun to deal particularly herself with the commercial and bookkeeping management of the firm, mainly collaborating with the importers, and also following, the net sale in Italy;

Enrico, graduated in Enologia to the university of Turin, has begun to deal himself of the technical management of the agricultural firm and the Wine cellar, keeping track of all the problems involved in the production side, but always in hold collaboration and following the wise suggestions of his father.

Cantina Rizzi Barbaresco Rizzi 2007
Characteristics: Estate grown Nebbiolo from their own grapes at Cru Rizzi in Treiso, a renowned hill in the Langhe, this is a plush and forgiving Nebbiolo of ripe mulberry fruit, chin dripping plums, and root spices on the nose. Comes on with juicy cherries, aromatic hardwoods, black tea leaves and well burnished tannins. At only 5 ½ years after harvest, this may be the most approachable Barbaresco I’ve tried to date –perhaps the first young sipping Barbaresco I’ve tried. Remarkable and yet it still true to Nebbiolo and delicious without waiting 20 years!
Wine review by Nicholas Livingston, February 2013

“Garnet in color with orange reflections typical of Nebbiolo. The nose has a fragrant and crisp aroma, with hints of red fruits and flavors of berries, and herbs, with floral and spicy notes. On the palate shows a great texture and tannic structure, with a nice sweetness, delicacy, elegance, great balance and fine tannins and a long finish, fruity and nervous.”

Cantina Rizzi Barbera d'Alba 2009
Characteristics: Bright ruby red in color with clear crimson highlights. Deep, full perfumes, elegant, well-balanced and enduring, reminiscent of rose, undergrowth and oriental spices. Very powerful bouquet. Fine structure accompanied by lively acidic freshness, sweetened by overall softness. Flavors conjure up morello cherry and plum jam with a long finish.

Cantina Rizzi Langhe Chardonnay 2011
Characteristics: Estate grown Chardonnay from Rizzi’s Speranza vineyard in Treiso within Piedmont, this snappy dry white carries a chamomile fragrance and pear fruit from the glass onto the palate where they are joined by a nuance of quince and lemon rinds that add some zest, some chalky mineral adding a textural dimension, and a beguiling richness to close with just a hint of hazelnuts –quite a feat for a fermented and aged in stainless steel.

Cantina Rizzi Langhe Chardonnay 2010
Characteristics: Charming Enrique told us his father made the unusual move to plant Chardonnay in Piedmont because his mother doesn’t drink red wine! And what a bonus for us – it’s the perfect balance between the delicate acidity we love in Italian whites and the richness of the Chardonnay varietal. There’s a bit of tropical fruit on the nose and a creaminess to the center of the palate, but also plenty of high-toned citrus flavors and just a touch of vanilla. De-lish.

Cantina Rizzi Moscato d'Asti 2012
Characteristics: There is so much to like about Moscato; its mouthfilling, magical flavours and sweetness with enliveining and fresh finish is so easy to like. Rizzi is a mere 5% alcohol, so easy to quaff. Melons and mangoes are the flavors, though the finish is more pineapple.
