Alexander Valley Vineyards
Sonoma
|
www.avvwine.com |
Nineteenth century pioneer Cyrus Alexander explored Northern Sonoma County and settled the fertile valley now named for him, selecting pristine acreage for his own residence. More than one hundred years later, in 1962, Harry and Maggie Wetzel purchased Alexander’s homestead from his heirs.
Today the Wetzel family estate is home to Alexander Valley Vineyards, a prominent, family owned and operated vineyard and winery. They grow fourteen grape varieties, on diverse sites stretching from the banks of the Russian River up onto the hillsides. Each grape variety is matched to a specific soil type and exposure.
The winery now produces 100,000 cases annually, including ten varietal wines and five proprietary blends. Barrel fermentation and aging take place in the 14,000 square foot cave, where the cool, constant temperature and high humidity are ideal for aging wines. |

Alexander Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Characteristics: Named for the prized Alexander Valley within Sonoma, Alexander Valley Vineyards’ Cabernet Sauvignon is a nimble wine whose depth and complexity whisper some of its secrets: that this estate bottling hails from various lots with different soils each fermented separately and blended for breadth –and that this spectrum of flavors widens from mixing in the other country cousins which like Cabernet Sauvignon come from Bordeaux; those are Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot who all come together during 14 months in barrel. In 2011, this meritage blend of sorts could pass as a Bordeaux from the Medoc for its tight red currants, a currant leaf aroma, a lifted spice, fine knit tannins, an al dente character worthy of the table, and a velvety mouthfeel. It somehow sates the desire for a big red without reading as sweet (as so many California reds have begun to read) and despite sating a thirst for a big red it also refreshes the palate with juicy acids. A seriously appealing taste of Alexander Valley. Wine review by Nicholas Livingston, May 2013

Alexander Valley Vineyards Gewurz 2009
Characteristics: Gewurtraminer grapes grow best in cooler climates like Mendocino's Potter Valley, the source for this 2009 Gewurz. This latest release shows an expressive nose of pineapple, lychee and pear and flavors of grapefruit and apple along with a big mineral component. You'll also notice the wine exhibits a creamy mouthfeel, nicely balanced by the wine's acidity. - Tasting notes from the winery.

Alexander Valley Vineyards Gewurz 2012
Characteristics: My word this is fragrant! Spicy floral top notes with a fresh core of fresh lychees –like a perfumed neck whose hug I want again and again. A crisp, mouthwatering palate is a relief after the nose as some aromatic wines read as too sweet –not here; this is simply delicious and leaves my entire mouth happily captive in its charming scents. Wine review by Nicholas Livingston, November 2012
In the glass the 2012 is a pale, straw yellow color with floral, sweet aromas of stone fruits, grapefruit, orange blossom and a hint of wet stone minerality. The flavors are similar to the aromas highlighted by pear, grapefruit, stone fruit, slight tropical notes and just the tiniest bit of spritz from the quick fermentation. Winemaker Kevin Hall says : “This wine is drier in style, with more minerality and spice than previous years, there is palate weight with this vintage and it almost has an Alsatian feel.” 12.8% ABV - notes from Alexander Valley Vineyards

Alexander Valley Vineyards Zinfandel Redemption 2009
Characteristics: Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel at 14.9% This has a dark edge for a wine titled “Redemption” with a dense core of blackberry fruit and an amped up black pepper spice to accompany lamb or smoked ribs. Full on the finish this is juicy, savory, spicy, and an absolute joy to drink as it goes down so easily. Wine review by Nicholas Livingston, August 2012
