Fruit Wine Varietals
The Purple Foot Club is an association of home winemakers in Minnesota. Years ago a friend and I were asked to judge at a competition they were staging. We asked for the fruit wine category, to us the most interesting of the home made wines. Not that grape varietals couldn’t be made well at home but because fruit wines were often a revelation.
Familiar with most of these fruits as pies, sauces, compotes it was like seeing an old friend after an extreme makeover. Fruits can be extraordinarily expressive as wines and warrant your affectionate attention.
