Alto Moncayo Aquilon 2010
Characteristics: Garnacha, known to most of the English speaking world by its French name Grenache, is actually as Spanish as Don Quixote. Grown under the Iberian sun, Garnacha thrives even during water stress and serious heat to yield spicy berried wines with hefty yet integrated alcohol, mild and juicy acids and a charming, hearty personality. These are: clap you on the back, I’m here for you! sorts of wines. They are a pleasure to simply knock back young or as a tasty treat to wash down tapas, cheese, and olives. Although Garnacha may be the most widely grown red variety the world over, Spain offers a home turf that thoroughly develops the best flavors of this long and late ripening variety.

Alto Moncayo Garnacha 2010
Characteristics: Alto Moncayo 2010 Garnacha, Campo de Borja DO | 16% | 100% Garnacha | Here is a pivotal red wine for one who usually dismisses the rich density of higher alcohol, extracted reds because for all its behemoth brawn and muscular flex it remains engaging and alluring –almost akin to a complex bourbon served neat where a booziness is calmed by integration –in this case one of dense blackberry compote where a waxy vanilla bean has dissolved into a medley of stewed dark fruit marrying all together into flavors altogether one: a toasty compote of reduced dark fruit, brown and blooming baking spices and a vanilla bourbon lift on the finish. It may only pair with rich hearty meaty fare but it is every bit as meditative as a nice glass of Port from an elegant vintage –either a Winter Warmer or a rich red for slathered ribs or a primeval rib-eye steak.
