Marsanne WineMarsanne, being more dependable and offering intriguing aromas, has gradually taken oven the role of blending once held in many Rhône appellations by Roussanne. Even now though these two varietals are like Abbott and Costello; in most case one needs the other. Marsanne in a typical vintage will be low in acidity tending to oxidation and browning. Roussanne plays the straight man bringing bracing acidity and complementary aromas to the wine.
So what is 100% or predominately Marsanne wine like? It will be round, deeply-colored wine and fairly full-bodied. The bouquet is of sandalwood, candle wax and crushed almonds. The “tell” for Marsanne is a waxy flavour and mouthfeel.

Gaillard St.Joseph Blanc 2006

Characteristics: A rich gold color matches the honey, waxy, Asian spiced citrus in the nose. The mouth is big and intense. Lots of dry spice notes to go with a very barrel aged quality. This is a wine for smoked duck and heavy cream cheeses. -WB (tasted January 2009)

Gaillard St.Joseph Blanc 2007

Characteristics: This is an appellation which should enjoy more following. This wine is very expressive in all facets. The fragrances are not pretty white wine aromas but instead compelling; wet stone, herbed focaccia, overly browned roux. Tremendous savor in the mouth. Almost a shimmer of flavours dancing on your tongue. Nuances of mango, lemon grass and pork loin drizzled with lemon oil. Incredibly fun wine to pair with food. - Wine Review by LAC (5/29/2009)

Guigal Crozes Hermitage Blanc 2005
Characteristics: Deep straw yellow color. A complex nose dominated by floral and vegetal aromas, often also characterized by acacia honey. A spicy wine, with a very marked texture for a white wine. A harmonious balance between an all but inexhaustible aromatic richness and workmanship typical of rare white wines.

Rutherglen Alliance Marsanne Viognier 2006

Characteristics: From the warm regions of SW Austrailia, this 70% Marsanne and 30% Rousanne are in their 3rd vintage only! The nose is honeyed melon with a slight cantaloupe. It’s got classic weight and structure – not the overly bodied and alcohol rich white Rhone wines that the New World has come to know. Elegant in its strength of flavors with a back palate grip and fabulous length. Great acid makes this wine extremely food friendly – I’d serve it with Asian cuisine . . . -SL, March 2009

Vienne St Joseph Blanc l'Elouede 2006

Characteristics: The wine takes its name from a meteorological phenomenon: during the summer, the hillsides become arid and crave the rain needed for the grapes and terroir to express themselves. The often-violent August storms are preceded by a great deal of lightning, known locally as Les élouèdes. The soil is mostly granite, covered with decomposing shale and gneiss. The climate is mostly continental, with hot, dry summers.
