Rhone blanc Wine

Certainly Rhone blanc is not a grape type. These wines are most often blends of several varietals so I’ll provide a sense of the wine here but we've also listed the wines under their predominate constituents. For example, if you search for Rhone blanc, Marsanne or Roussanne wine included among the wines returned in each search will be Les Vins de Viennes St. Joseph blanc as it is a white Rhone wine dominated by Marsanne wine and Roussanne wine. See?

It is in the southern Rhone where Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache blanc, Bourboulenc, Viognier principally and still others besides are used in blended white wines. When I say predominate grape it’s usually but not necessarily as a percentage of the blend but rather as it contributes to the wine’s fragrance, flavour and finish. So here we go…

White Rhones are medium-bodied wines that are very aromatic often of stone fruits, like apricot, or citrus, particularly zest. Flavours of brioche and other baked goods or of melon dance around a core of minerality. All this can make for a pretty rich wine but bracing acidity keeps the wines fresh at least in their youth.

Fairview Goats Do Roam White 2009
Characteristics: "Rich aromas of peach and pear with floral fragrance and citrus. Mouthfeel has richness, and fruit flavours follow through from the nose with honeysuckle on the finish.
WINEMAKERS COMMENTS: This is the first time that we have harvested Roussanne and this varietal has brought a lovely character to the wine. We have been planting Roussanne over the past few years and this first experience is encouraging. I am looking forward to the variety playing more of a role in the future."

Guigal Côtes du Rhône Blanc 2009
Characteristics: I like this; a lot to say from me when it comes to Cotes du Rhone blanc. Sometimes having done this for so long can be stifling. My years, nay decades, of detesting these wines has closed my eyes to the new truth. The last three vintages of Cotes du Rhone blanc from Guigal have been increasingly fine. The 2009 has a nose of melon with a squeeze of lemon and a grind of white pepper. The flavour is soft fruits and a stoniness that I think of in wines with Grenache blanc in the blend. Guigal Côtes du Rhône Blanc 2008

L'Ermitage Blanc Costieres des Nimes 2009
Characteristics: 60% Roussanne, 20% Grenache Blanc, 20% Viognier
The nose reveals lilacs, an understated citrus quality and a bit of peach in the background. The palate is round and juicy and French (what a fantastic combination!) yet finishes dry and a bit dusty. This is my house wine for Summer 2010.

Perrin Reserve Blanc 2009
Characteristics: With 50% Grenache, 20% Bouboulenc, 10% Marsanne, 10% Roussanne and 10% Viognier this makes for a remarkable fruit salad of grapes and flavors. Ripe melons and toned peaches collide with high notes of pineapple. This walks the line between the new world and old world archetypes and is a great wine to lure your steadfast California dreamers into France bay way of the southern Rhone.
