Viognier WineViognier is an impressive grape to be sure. At home in the sunny environs of the Rhone Valley of France, Viognier can easily play for the title of making some of the world's richest and most powerful white wines. There is nothing shy about Viognier, and what this grape sometimes lacks in acid backbone it can more than make up for in heady floral aromas, intense peach and orange citrus fruit tones, an unparalleled viscosity on the palate, and a very friendly relationship with toasty French oak treatment.
The Northern Rhone district of Condrieu is the pinnacle of Viognier production, and it is only here where intense sun meets cool evenings and south facing slopes of granite and sandy mica that anyone even discusses the idea of aging Viognier beyond a 3-5year window. But really (just between you and me) Viognier is a wine to be enjoyed in its heady and wanton exuberance of youth. Viognier is grown all over southern France appearing at times as a single varietal headliner and, often as not, as a throaty member of an ensemble cast assembled in the hopes of striking gold with equal parts power and elegance.
Its impressive profile and youthful appeal have also made Viognier a viticultural hit in sun drenched regions from California, and Washington State to Australia and even parts of Spain. It's easy to see why. Who among us doesn't love a show pony, especially one which offers the world's perfect answer to "what should I drink tonight with this beautiful fresh asparagus I just bought"?

Calera Viognier 2008
Characteristics: Peach and apricot nose with acacia and tight grained oak. This is a peach pit wine; no surprise because that's classic Viognier, but the Calera is not simply text book, not even prose, it is poetry. Elegant, defined with a length like the peel of a bell. Terrific wine! -Wine review by LAC, December 2009

Cline Cellars Viognier 2009
Characteristics: Cline Viognier shows big pineapple, peach and apricot fl avors mixed with citrus and fl oral notes. This full-bodied fl avorful wine is an excellent match for Mediterranean stews, Thai curry and spicy Mexican dishes. - notes from the winery

Cono Sur Viognier 2008
Characteristics: Wow, this is a dead ringer for Viognier! The nose sings of peaches and apricots and Juicy Fruit gum. The palate is bright and soft and juicy with an almost bubble gummy quality to it as well. This really over-delivers for the money. -JL (Tasted 11/14/08)

Cono Sur Viognier 2009

Characteristics: Soft peach, cream and tangerine on the nose with a little dry spice note. The mouth is dry and clean with a crisp malic apple texture and flavor. This wine is very young and tight today and should blossom in the spring of 2010. -Wine review by WB, December 2009

Gaillard Condrieu 2007
Characteristics: Holy Halidom! Intense nectarine, tangerine, freshly baked peach pastry, and a faint peach blossom completely occupy my bulb. Condrieu fills every corner of the palate with just ripened peaches and nectarines. A rich medium body is entirely balanced by the acidity you’d expect from Clementines. There is nothing flabby about this distinct Viognier. Clearly on par with the great Condrieus of Cuilleron, its rich balance and breadth make it my first choice by a country mile. –N.L.
