Albarino WineAlbarino is a new experience for many people. It has only recently been available in any quantity in the export market, at least as a wine from Spain. It was fairly well represented as Vinho Verde from Portugal, oh but I like this so much more. The truly fine examples of this grape are the dry white wines from the Rias Baixes section of the Galicia region of Northwestern Spain.
Weather conditions in the Rias Baixes are generally cool, windy and rainy. Vines were traditionally widely spaced and trained on granite pergolas called parrales to enhance sun and wind exposure ameliorating the chance of rot and fungal disease. Many vineyards today are moving to the espaldera system - a local variant of the Geneva Double Curtain training system as it is less labor-intensive and cheaper. I am anxious over this change. Same varietal, same soil, same microclimate, grapes grown on different trellising can still yield significantly different wines.
For Albarino virgins the first bottle will be a revelation; fragrances of citrus, more precisely of lemon zest and pink grapefruit, slightly under ripe white peaches and the smell of an alfalfa field when you walk through it early on a dewy morning. The wine was light-bodied and while the flavours reflected the fragrances it was hard to grasp on to any one as the bracing acid gave the wine a shimmer in the mouth.
The wine made traditionally does not age well but why should it? It is fresh, lovely and alive. I’m aghast at the trend realizing itself in the region now of doing malolactic on the wine so that it holds up longer in the bottle.

Brandal Albarino 2007
Characteristics: Full fragrant aromas of stonefruits carry over from the nose leading to a rich, refreshing palate awash with ripe nectarines and apricots off the branch. A Galician prince among Albarinos, this is richer, fuller, more viscous and still all the more nimble and quick with a snappy acidity and an invigorating quality. An instant favorite among Summer whites, it has plenty of lift to enjoy it on even the hottest afternoon and enough body and texture to accompany a wide array of fish and vegetables off the grill as well as a whole chicken roasted with sage and thyme for that rainy afternoon when lighting the oven is actually a sensible choice. Wine review by Nicholas D. Livingston, July 2010
Bright pale lemon yellow color leads to a surprisingly shut down nose. All is forgiven on first taste though. Lemons and sweet pineapple are the most pronounced flavors and while this has good acid, it’s got great balance and a pleasant lingering finish. -JL

Fuzelo Vino Verde 2009
Characteristics: Very pale hay color with tiny bubbles and a hint of green as well. Lemon-line, herbal notes a bit of white flowers too. Fizzy and light in the mouth with a bigger weight than most other Vinho Verdes. Clean friendly finish. - wine tasting note by PC, April 2010

Nora Albarino Rias Biaxas 2008
Characteristics: This wine continues top improve with every vintage. The 2008 shows extremely fresh and lively in the nose and mouth, with sweet pea, sweet tart citrus and ginger. Perfect with white fish, sushi or curry chicken. - wine tasting note by CM, January 2010
The wine draws your attention with aromas of ripe apples, honey and peaches. On the palate, Nora has an excellent balance of fresh fruit flavors and a rich silky texture. This is one of those wines that brings home the beauties of minerality, delicate yet discernable fruit and great acidity. Not only that, it doesn’t break the bank.
