Chenin Blanc WineChenin blanc fooled me for years; ubiquitous cheap Vouvray wine or pabulum from California, complete yawners. When I first tasted Coulee de Serrant, it was incredulous that this ethereal wine was made from Chenin blanc wine. It took several more slaps along side the head for me to finally profess a deep admiration for the potential of this grape.
It can range from sublime sweet wines such as Quartes de Chaume, or Moelleux Vovray to divinely dry Savennieres. Beyond the varying sweetness the flavours can be apple, melon, pear even honey.

Baumard Coteaux du Layon Carte d'Or 2005

Characteristics: Soft, rich aromas of honey and Golden Crisp apples. Beautiful, long and pervasive with more golden honey covered apples and sweet apricots in the mouth. Balanced with decent acid toward the really long finish. An excellent after dinner wine or pair with mango crème brulee. -SL

Baumard Savennières 2005
Characteristics: Ah, if only all wine could be Savennieres! Chenin Blanc in Savennieres is like Bilbo Baggins in the Shire. He may wander far afield on adventures and might even take on other names but his heart belongs below given ground in the comfort of his Hobbit hole. Baumard's 2005 Savennieres is no exception. In no other place does Chenin Blanc harmonize lime trees, melon rinds, minerals and lanolin yielding a palate as redolent of the nose with waxy vibrancy? Full in the belly yet nimble on its feet, this speaks softly despite having so much to say. This 2005 is rich with lime rinds glowing with a resinous, sappy complexity throughout the generous finish. Ah, if only all wine could be Savennieres! Tasting review by Nicholas D. Livingston (December 2009)
Creamy with a flinty like edge. Aromas of seashells and quince. In the mouth this wine is fresh with layers of white stone and tropical fruit. Very refined and mouth filling. - Wine tasting note by KS, February 2010
