Gruner Veltliner Wine

Grüner Veltliner can produce stunning wines. But some things take a long time to catch on; the world is round, that it circles the sun, radical stuff like that. Gruner Veltliner has taken nearly as long to gain popularity; it was planted in what is now Austria by the Roman Legions. To my knowledge, however, no has been excommunicated or even accused of heresy for pronouncing admiration for the varietal at least lately. Terry Theise may have come close.

Styles vary mostly by the soil type on which the vines are grown. Grown in granite and granite gneiss, the finest Grüner Veltliners from Austria’s Wachau are deep and powerful. The mineral laden loess soils of the Kamptal and Kremstal, on the other hand, produce distinguished, elegant wines that age with grace. These are actually the wines I prefer. If I want wines that are powerful with this personality I’ll look to Riesling wine.

.Its fragrance is of freshly ground white pepper, Texas grapefruit, and sometimes snap pea vines on a dewy morning. The flavour is often of peaches with lemon grass and minerals with attention grabbing acidity. Really a joy to drink.

Anton Bauer Grüner Veltliner Gmork 2009
Characteristics: Grüner Veltliner 2009
Gmörk
12% vol. alc.
Wonderful, brilliant yellow; everything in the nose what one may desire from a Veltliner: multi-layered fruit and multi-layered spice, pepper, nut, apple and exotic; very stimulating bouquet, immediately unfolding finesse; lively bundle, desiring to have the next sip. Grüner Veltliner can be so lovely in this style.
- notes from the winery

A brief additional note. I find kiwi in the flavours of this wine and fresh ground white pepper in the finish. It has a softness that I am beginning to associate with many European whites of the vintage; in fact, across a much wider breadth of appellations than to which one, at least this one, would normally ascribe a vintage characteristic. Anton Bauer Grüner Veltliner Reserve 2007
Characteristics: Many fans of ArtisanVineyards have come to know that we are passionate about our Gruners! There is so much to enjoy about them, most notably that they are great wines to pair with a wide variety of foods. The Anton Bauer Reserve is a standout for its unique style. While still steely and mineral in the nose, this one offers vanilla bean and cream, along with mouthwatering melon and citrus fruit. The finish is a bit more refined than most, with acids that seem to be enveloped in lush fruit. -CM (tasted February 2009)

Ecker Gruner Veltliner 2008
Characteristics: There’s a green nose of fresh herbs – basil and mint. The palate is a bit rounder than previous vintages and shows lime with a bit of richness. The zingy finish has classic Gru-Ve white pepper. The wine is so clean and fresh, it is no wonder that Ecker is one of the more modern producers in this part of Austria. Our importer says what lifts their wine is their “great good humor” and I can’t help agreeing. It is so fetching you’ll want to have plenty around because it always beckons another glass.
- wine tasting note by DYB, May 2010

Means Green Veltliner, pale yellow color, aromas of green apple with a hint of spice, very bright and clean, a little zingy in the mouth, the acidity is really well balanced, an extremely long finish. - Wine review by MN

Eichinger Grüner Veltliner Gaisberg 2006
Characteristics: Wonderfully bright and rich on the nose with light peachy white pepper and moist granite. The underlying acidity balances the rich and soft fruits with finesse. White spice, peaches and cream. The lengthy finish is clean and balanced with good minerality and fruits. -SL

Hirsch Grüner Veltliner #1 2008
Characteristics: Hirsch means deer in Austria. Each release has a different deer label. For me this raises an eyebrow. Still the wines are really good so I'll tolerate the kitsch.

Fresh and very fruity. It reminds of the frozen green grapes I ate as a kid and even occasionally now. A lemon sorbet-like flavour. _ Wine review by LAC. September, 2010.
