Muscadet Wine

Muscadet is not a varietal but a wine from a region of that name. The varietal is Melon de Bourgogne. Not many people would know to look at Melon de Bourgogne if they wanted to know something about the grape type in Muscadet so we’ve done that here.

Muscadet is on the Atlantic end of the Loire River in France and there Melon de Bourgogne is made into a wine that is as seaboard fresh as the land surrounding. This is often claimed to be the perfect wine for oysters and, in fact, one can smell fresh shucked oyster and sea breezes in the wine.

Muscadet wines are light bodied, dry, fresh and crisp. Their great acidity imparts a mouth watering character that gives the wine great immediate appeal. Lemon zest, green grapes, minerality.

Domaine de l'Auriere Muscadet 2009
Characteristics: Normally saying nice things about Muscadet is like saying nice things about a Pinto. No matter how nice it is, it’s still a Pinto. That said, I am forced to admit how much I enjoyed this one. It has a nose of yellow grapefruit rind and fresh lemons. On the palate it’s light, bright, clean and citrusy (lemon and orange) with just a touch of salinity. While a bit less complex than some Muscadet’s, it has a delightful approachablilty. In this case less seems to be more.
-tasting note by JL, August 2010

This is quite a wine for the price. We've tasted this wine for several years but this is the first time we've bought it. The fruit is lively green grapes and crisp cold apples. In the mouth there is plenty of the typical muscadet acidity. The minerality is not quite as agressive as one would like but this is a minor obsevation given the overall quality of Domaine de L'Auriere.

Hautes Noëlles Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu 2009
Characteristics: This is one of my favorite vintners in the Loire. The wines, as the man, are mindful. His property is located in Muscadet Cotes de Grandlieu where granite and shist define the soils and the lake moderates the temperatures. Grapes grown on granite tend to be more aromatic and those on shist, more mineral. What a happy consequence for Haut Noelles muscadet. To me the wine smells like sliced cactus sprinkled with kosher salt and drizzled with a squeeze of fresh lime. The flavours are fresh and lively and delicate yet not so much as to let your attention slide. I could drink this everyday and never get bored. - Wine reviewed by LAC. August, 2010.

Ragotiere Muscadet 2007
Characteristics: Chateau de la Ragotiere Muscadet ‘07

Light straw color – jewel toned. A bit more aromatic than many a muscadet, yeasty nose with apple and pear. More apple on the palate, good acidity blankets the alcohol and makes all things pleasant. Bottled directly off the lees for character, this wine would be a gift to shellfish consumers.

Ragotiere Muscadet 2008
Characteristics: It is totally amazing to me that, in a vintage so horrific for Loire vintners that many refused to make a wine with their name on the label, this wine emerged and is not just okay, but perfectly delicious. The nose is all you look for in Muscadet – fresh herbs (like the stems of fresh parsley and cilantro) floral notes and lemongrass. There’s a bit of preserved lemon on the finish with plenty of zing that leaves your mouth watering for more.
