White WineIf you are fascinated by white wines you’re either just starting your love affair with wine or you’ve reached the golden years. In the beginning there are reasons to be enamored; foremost probably is that it’s served chilled, it may have some sweetness and there is no bitterness from tannins. For a time in the middle you’ll be seduced by red wines and see no other. Finally you discover the joy of complex white wines where balance is as precise as a ballerina’s and bouquet and flavours are as rewarding as a sonnet. More than any other type of wine this is where the “Taste Profiles” in the search feature can be useful. There is such a spectrum of white wines and within white varietals that a star to guide by can be a great help. I tell you from personal experience, stumbling around in the dark one bumps into some exciting things.

A to Z Chardonnay 2007
Characteristics: This unwooded Chardonnay starts off with lemon crème, pineapple and honey notes. There is no mistaking that decided Oregon / Dijon clone thing going on here – very steely. Finishes with a bright fresh zested lemon note. -JL, tasted February 2009

A To Z Riesling 2007

Characteristics: The team at A to Z blends fruit from four great vineyards to achieve this delicious wine. Two of the younger vineyards are located in Southern Oregon in higher altitude vineyards in the Rogue and Applegate Valleys. The two oldest vineyards are located in the Eola Hills and the Chehalem Mountain AVAs in the Northern Willamette Valley. There’s a great nose of spicy kumquat and citron. The palate shows juicy lime, not in “chalky” way but perfect mineral balance. -Wine review by DYB, May 2009

Alexander Valley Vineyards Chardonnay 2005
Characteristics: This bright flavorful wine was produced from five individual blocks of Chardonnay. Stainless steel and barrel fermentation with multiple yeast strains, French oak barrel aging on the yeast lees, and partial secondary or malolactic fermentation all combine to present a flavorable and complex wine. Wonderful fruit is balanced with generous alcohol and acidity, enhanced with French oak and yeast aromas. The wine finishes with great flavor and length.

Alexander Valley Vineyards Chardonnay 2008
Characteristics: Winemaker Kevin Hall's approach is to make a Chardonnay that accentuates the qualities of the varietal attained during the growing season. Thus, 70% of the fruit was fermented in stainless steel. The remainder went into barrel. Malolactic fermentation was used on that portion in the barrel, the lees were stirred every other week, and finally the wine was aged in a combination of new, one and two-year-old French oak.
The product of this effort is a Chardonnay exhibiting lush apple and pear flavors along with some tropical fruit notes and a hint of vanilla. The 2008 also shows a bit more minerality than some previous vintages, making this a complex, food-friendly Chardonnay. 98% Chardonnay, 2% Viognier

Alexander Valley Vineyards Chardonnay 2009
Characteristics: This 2009 Estate Chardonnay is clearly distinctive. It isn't overoaked nor is it stripped bare. Instead. it follows a style we've come to embrace at AVV. The fruit is at the forefront with the oak playing a supporting role.
To achieve that quality, we ferment 70% of the fruit in stainless steel. The remainder is fermented in the barrel, subjected to malolactic fermentation and then aged for eight months in French oak.
The result is a well-balanced, food-friendly Chardonnay with flavors of apple, pear and citrus accented by a bit of creaminess and toasty oak. The 2009 also exhibits some nice acidity, the result of moderate temperatures throughout most of the year and a harvest season that was slightly cooler than normal. - The Winemaker
